Gallery Players are proud to present the regional premiere of the rarely performed award winning musical RENT at the NEW WOLSEY THEATRE, IPSWICH from JULY 6th to 10th, 2010.
Productions of this iconic musical are few and far between and together with some familiar faces Gallery Players have assembled a young vibrant cast of twenty three actors each of whom has a real commitment to bringing this hard-hitting musical to the New Wolsey stage.
Based on Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT is a story of love and loyalty among starving artists in New York’s East Village. In Puccini’s version, the Parisian bohemians are afflicted with tuberculosis. For Jonathan Larson, the modern equivalent was clearly AIDS, a disease which had struck down several of his closest friends.
It is Christmas Eve on the Lower East Side. A group of friends come together to share a night in a special way. Over the next year, as relationships grow and change, they have to struggle with paying the rent, eviction, drugs and living one day at a time.
At it’s heart RENT explores the true meaning of friendship, community and loyalty. Each character has a crisis with which they are struggling, whether it is a relationship or illness and the bonds of friendship are finally strengthened in a philosophy which says that there is ‘no day but today’.
The musical ran for more than 12 years on Broadway and won 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Score. With musical numbers such as ‘Seasons of Love’ and ‘Without You’, Jonathan Larson’s musical quickly became a milestone in musical theatre and wherever it is staged attracts a wide following. We sincerely hope that you take the opportunity to join us in what promises to be a truly moving and enjoyable experience.
