One of Sondheims lesser known works
this briliant musical charts the clash of
two cultures Japanese and American
– and tells the story of two men, one a
minor samurai, the other a
shipwrecked fisherman, whose lives
are completely changed by the arrival
of the Americans in 1852.
Impossible to categorise and difficult to
describe the story is played out in an
Americanised version of Japanese
Kabuki theatre, all the parts being
played by men (even the geisha girls!)
Hilarious in parts, chilling in others
Ipswich has never seen anything
like Pacific Overtures.
